Notre Dame Hounds (2) vs Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (3/SO) U15 Prep Division II Western Championships
Yuki Kido’s 50-save performance lifted Pilot Mound Hockey Academy to a 3-2 shootout win over the Notre Dame Hounds. Pilot Mound put lots of pressure on Notre Dame in the first period, outshooting them 21-12. That pressure led to the opening goal of the game from Hinata Hashimoto 13:21 into the game to give Pilot Mound a one-goal lead. Notre Dame fought back in the final minutes of the second, scoring twice in 1:28. Jax Baumuller evened the game up and shortly after Duke Lesnar found the back of the net to send Notre Dame into the dressing room with a 2-1 advantage. The back-and-forth battle continued in the third with Matsun Adams scoring the equalizer for Pilot Mound just over seven minutes into the third. The goalies took over after that with Notre Dame’s Hudson Pooler (56/58) and Pilot Mound’s Yuki Kido (50/52) standing tall to send the game to a shootout. Cole Landreville started off the skills competition with a beautiful move to get around Pooler and that marker would prove to be the difference. Kido was the other difference maker for Pilot Mound in the shootout, turning aside all three shooters he faced.Ìý
OHA Edmonton (4) vs Shawnigan Lake School (3) Female U18 Prep Western Championships
OHA Edmonton scored three times in the third to complete a 4-3 comeback win over Shawnigan Lake School. The two teams leading scorers in the regular season traded goals in the opening period. Taya Lonsdale (2G) gave Shawnigan the lead with just over eight minutes to go in the first. A few minutes later, Riley Cooper (2G, 1A) responded for OHA Edmonton scoring her first goal of the Western Championships. Ava Antle (39/42) was strong for OHA Edmonton in the first, stopping 16 of the 17 shots she faced but her biggest save came in the dying seconds. Shawnigan had a huge chance to retake the lead, finding a rebound out in front but Antle was able to stretch out her glove to rob the Shawnigan shooter. Shawnigan continued to press in the second and it paid off. Grace Cooper gave Shawnigan the lead and Taya Lonsdale took advantage on the power play to give them a 3-1 lead heading into the third. OHA Edmonton wouldn’t go away with Joryn Hempel (1G, 1A) scoring to cut OHA Edmonton’s deficit in half 29 seconds into the final frame. Izzy Gollop tied the game up for OHA Edmonton while shorthanded, chipping the puck around her defender to send herself in on a breakaway and she made no mistake. Riley Cooper capped off the comeback victory for OHA Edmonton, roofing a backhand with 3:13 left. Antle was a big piece of OHA Edmonton’s victory, turning aside 39 of the 42 shots she faced. Alix Walchuk (23/27) made 23 saves for Shawnigan.Ìý
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (2) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (3/OT) U15 Prep Division II Western Championships
Okanagan Hockey Academy continued the dramatics of the day getting a 3-2 overtime win over Pacific Coast Hockey Academy. It was all quiet through two periods with PCHA’s Rio Manhas (41/44) stopping all 25 shots he faced and OHA’s Maddox Slater (32/34) kicking out 20 shots. Nathan Marques broke the deadlock early in third, giving OHA the first lead of the contest. It didn’t look like there would be much scoring the rest of the way until a flurry of goals came late in the period. Gage Mark doubled OHA’s lead with 3:25 left, putting home his third goal of the Western Championships. 33 seconds later, PCHA got on the board with Dane Dyer (1G, 1A) scoring to pull them within one. In the final minute, with an extra attacker on the ice, PCHA tied the game up on a point shot from Ethan Parsons to send the game to overtime. In the last minute of the extra frame, Talon Scinocca was the hero for OHA, turning his defender inside-out and roofing a backhand past PCHA’s Manhas. Slater turned aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced for OHA. Manhas made 41 saves for PCHA.Ìý
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (2) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (16) Female U18 Prep Western Championships
Nearly every player had a point for RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna in a dominant 16-2 win over RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg. Alida Korte (4G, 1A) and Jillian McLaughlin (3G) each had recorded hat tricks for RHA Kelowna. Anezka Cabelova (1G, 4A), Danica Maynard (1G, 3A), Kennedy Sisson (4A), Makena Lloyd-Howe (1G, 2A), Ava MacLoed (1G, 2A), and Ava McDermid (3A) each had big games for RHA Winnipeg. Hayley McDonald (1G, 1A), Callie Rice (1G, 1A), Kaitlyn Mallette, Emelia McDermid, and Emery Twardochleb rounded out the RHA Kelowna’s goal-scoring. Braya Kapusta and Shayla Scinocca had the markers for RHA Winnipeg. Jaya Schippel (15/17) made 15 saves in RHA Kelowna’s victory.Ìý
Edge School (3) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (1) Female U18 Prep Western Championships
A three-goal first period powered Edge School to a 3-1 win over Okanagan Hockey Academy. A minute into the game, Sara Hettle gave Edge the lead and they would never look back. Avaya McCann tacked on another goal for Edge about five minutes later, forcing a goaltending change for OHA. Edge extended their lead with a power play marker from Jaselyn Hojnocki to send them into the dressing room with a 3-0 advantage. OHA got one back early in the second with Felicia Girardo scoring 57 seconds into the period. OHA continued to push, outshooting Edge 23-18 in the final two periods. Alexis Ehrman (36/37) stood tall and closed out Edge’s win, turning aside 36 of the 37 shots sent her way. Jorja Moore (28/29) stopped 28 of the 29 shots she faced in relief for OHA.Ìý
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (6) vs Edge School (3) U15 Prep Western Championships
DJ Mecas’ 59-save effort lifted tenth-seeded RINK Hockey Academy to a 6-3 upset win over second-seeded Edge School. RHA Winnipeg got a great start, scoring three times in the first period. Brady Filmon (3G, 1A) opened the scoring with a power play marker. Just over three minutes later, Athens Shingoose (1G, 2A) doubled RHA Winnipeg’s lead with his first goal of the Western Championships. Easton Pitz (2G, 1A) capped off the trio of first period goals, scoring with 5:22 left in the frame. Edge cut the deficit down to 3-1 with a goal early in the second by Easton Perzylo. RHA Winnipeg restored their three-goal lead when Shingoose connected with Pitz for his second goal of the game. Edge pushed hard in the second, outshooting RHA Winnipeg 22-8. That pressure would help Edge make it a one-goal game with Remy Koch (1G, 1A) and Grayson Bauer (1G, 1A) finding the back of the net before the buzzer sounded to end the second. Edge continued to push hard in the third, sending 21 shots toward the RHA Winnipeg goal. DJ Mecas (59/62) was a rock for RHA Winnipeg, turning aside every single shot sent his way in the period. Filmon helped out his goaltender in the third by scoring to give RHA Winnipeg some insurance and added on an empty-net goal to cap off his hat trick. Delano Pockar (22/27) made 22 saves for Edge.Ìý
South Alberta Hockey Academy (4) vs Delta Hockey Academy Green (1) Female U18 Prep Western Championships
Kamryn Reiber’s two-goal game lifted South Alberta Hockey Academy to a 4-1 win over Delta Hockey Academy Green. It didn’t take long for SAHA to get on the board with Teagan Torgerson scoring the lone goal of the opening period. In the second, Delta Green got into penalty trouble, getting for two infractions in eight seconds. Delta Green nearly killed off the two penalties but in the final seconds of the last penalty Kamryn Reiber (2G) put home a rebound to extend SAHA’s lead. SAHA would strike again shortly after that with their captain Riley Gramlich (1G, 1A) scoring on a laser of a wrist shot. Molly Cole brought Delta Green within two early in the third, finishing off a three-way passing play. Delta Green would put the pressure on for the rest of the period, outshooting SAHA 11-4. SAHA’s netminder Emma Skolney (21/22) held steady, kicking out 10 shots. Reiber closed out the game for SAHA with an empty-net goal in the final minute. Keyana Bert (2A) and Sophie Erlam (2A) both picked up a pair of helpers for SAHA. Skolney turned aside 21 of the 22 shots she faced in SAHA’s victory. Jillian Matthews (27/30) made 27 saves for Delta Green.Ìý
Bishop’s College School (2) vs Fort Erie International Academy (6) East U17
In the only CSSHL regular season matchup of the day Fort Erie International Academy skated away with a 6-2 home win over Bishop’s College School. Midway through the first, Fort Erie would get their offence going with two goals in 18 seconds from Joel Thompson (1G, 1A) and Loik Maloney. It was a chippy period and that would provide each team with some power play opportunities. The squads would make the most of it with Charles Vouligny (2G, 1A) giving Fort Erie a three-goal edge but Bishop’s College would respond with their own goal on the man advantage from Brandon Fuicelli. Special teams continued to be a big factor for Fort Erie in the second with Jayden Goolab (1G, 1A) scoring on the power play and Christophe Gagne getting a shorthanded marker. 15 seconds after Fort Erie’s shorthanded goal, Grady Cohen replied for Bishop’s College with their second goal on the man advantage to make it a 5-2 game. Fort Erie’s Vouligny found the back of the net for the second time in the contest to cap off the goal-scoring. Samuel Schnelling (3A) and Thomas Harvey (2A) each had multi-point games for Fort Erie. Felix-Antoine Tessier (30/32) turned aside 30 of the 32 shots sent his way in Fort Erie’s net. Tyler Fuicelli (28/34) made 28 saves for Bishop’s College.Ìý
Okanagan Hockey Academy Black (1) vs Balmoral Hall School (5) Female U18 Prep Division II Western Championships
Makenna Williment scored twice, including the eventual game-winning goal, to help Balmoral Hall School cruise to a 5-1 victory over Okanagan Hockey Academy Black. Balmoral Hall got the scoring started with a pair of goals in the first period. They took advantage of two rebound chances with Lydia Hill giving them the lead and Makenna Williment (2G) tacking on one more. OHA Black took their lone penalty of the game with two seconds left in the first but it would end costing them. Williment finished off a tic-tac-toe play on the power play to score the only goal of the second period. Brannagh Rae (1G, 1A) and Lucie Velinska would add on two more goals for Balmoral Hall in the third. Mimi Ferreira (27/28) looked like she was going to get a shutout but OHA Black would break their goose egg with a goal by Alice Rapp with 1:24 left. Maddie Kaiser (2A), Madeline McKay (2A), and Lily Spurrell (2A) had a pair of helpers for Balmoral Hall. Ferreira kicked out 27 of the 28 shots she faced in Balmoral Hall’s victory. Teagan Janzen (43/48) made 43 saves for OHA Black.Ìý
OHA Edmonton (4) vs Delta Hockey Academy (6) U15 Prep Western Championships
Tripp Fischer (2G, 1A), Peter Banicevic (1G, 2A), and Ryker Doka (3A) each had three points in Delta Hockey Academy’s 6-4 win over OHA Edmonton. Liam McFadden (1G, 1A) gave OHA Edmonton an early lead with his first goal of the Western Championships. Ronan Gow evened the game up for Delta midway through the period. The offence picked up late in the first with the teams scoring three times in the final 2:32 of the frame. Josh Frazer scored to help OHA Edmonton retake the lead. Delta responded with a power play goal from Colton Brum. Then, Tripp Fischer bulged the twine to give Delta the lead with 12 seconds left in the period. Delta stretched their lead to three with Fischer adding another goal late in the second and Nicolas Peach (1G, 1A) scoring on the man advantage early in the third. OHA Edmonton began their comeback attempt after that with Brayden Tucker and Anderson Reschny scoring twice in four minutes to cut the deficit to one. Delta’s Peter Banicevic thwarted OHA Edmonton’s comeback bid, scoring a great solo effort in the closing minutes. Jack Utsunomiya (46/50) kicked out 46 shots for Delta. Gavin Steeves (39/45) made 39 saves for OHA Edmonton.Ìý
BWC Academy (5) vs St. George’s School (1) U15 Prep Western Championships
From a sharp angle, Prince George, BC native, Logan Henry, kick started the scoring for BWC Academy just over two minutes in. Saints sniper, Louis Oscar Holowaychuk, would cram home a rebound shortly after to tie things up for St. George’s. However, 2011-born forward Kenzo Gibson (2G) would score his first of the Western Championships to restore BWC Academy’s lead before the ice clean. BWC Academy would keep the pressure going in the second, resulting in a goal from Cohen Baker (2G). The offensive trend would continue in the third for BWC Academy as Gibson and Baker would each tally their second of the evening en route to a comfortable 5-1 win. Bentley Edgar (23/24) played a solid game between the pipes, registering 23-saves.
Northern Alberta Xtreme (1) vs St. Mary’s Academy (2) Female U18 Prep Division II Western Championships
Keyauna Robinson-Prefontaine (34/35) and Aldawna Evers (23/25) kept clean sheets in the first period and the opening 10 minutes of the second as the game remained scoreless. Reese Kartusch finally broke through for St. Mary’s 13:47 into the second with her first of the Championships. Mayson Mattersdorfer tied the game just 1:35 into the third period, putting NAX on level terms. Camryn Falloon (1G, 1A) would capitalise on the power play with 4:56 remaining to put St. Mary’s ahead. NAX would push with 14 shots in the third but were unable to come up with an equaliser as St. Mary’s held on for the 2-1 win.Ìý
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (0) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (5) U15 Prep Western Championships
The number one seed NAX booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 5-0 win over the ninth seed RHA Kelowna. Luka Samu (1G, 1A) and defenseman Cruz Jim (2G) scored first period goals to give their team a 2-0 lead. Parker Naumann scored the lone second period goal as NAX increased their advantage to 3-0 heading into the third. NAX would get third period goals from defensemen Nolan Wolitski (1G, 2A) and Jim to take home a commanding 5-0 victory. Karter Gibson (20/20) made 20 saves for the shutout while Dylan Mingo (36/41) was charged with the loss.
